What Is Blue Light and Why Does It Matter?

Without getting into complicated physics, blue light is part of the visible light spectrum, located at the blue end with shorter wavelengths ranging from 380 to 500 nm. While blue light has certain benefits, it can also pose risks to eye health.

Blue light is everywhere, from sunlight to fluorescent and LED lighting, as well as the screens of TVs, smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Unlike ultraviolet (UV) light, which is largely blocked by the front structures of the eye, most visible blue light passes through the cornea and lens and reaches the retina.

Prolonged exposure to blue light may contribute to eye strain and could potentially increase the risk of macular degeneration over time.

Fortunately, research has shown that lenses that filter blue light can help:

  • Reduce eye strain
  • Lower the risk of macular damage
  • Improve contrast for clearer, more comfortable vision

This makes blue light filter lenses particularly useful for people who spend long hours in front of digital screens, helping maintain comfort and visual performance throughout the day.
