Low vision aids are assistive devices that are invented and designed to improve the visual performance in people with low vision. These devices provide greatly increased magnification capabilities, along with higher optical quality. First of all, let us explain to you about “low vision”, shall we? You might not be familiar with this term but this condition is not uncommon in Malaysia after all.

What is low vision?

“Is it blindness?” Many may ask so. Low vision generally refers to reduced vision or constricted visual field that cannot be corrected with medical or surgical intervention, or even glasses. People with low vision have limited sights remained, hence it is NOT blindness after all.

What are the causes of low vision?

In Malaysia, some of the most common causes of low vision are diabetes, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. Low vision can be resulted from inherited eye disorder, injury affecting the eye or systemic disease affecting the whole body such as diabetes.

Magnifiers

Magnifiers are traditional aids to improve the vision, they are especially preferred for near tasks by visually impaired people. Magnifiers enlarge image of the things you want to view, be it for reading or to see any details more clearly in leisure activities. Generally, magnifiers are made of lightweight aspheric lenses for a more convenient utilization and a less burdening handling. Hand Magnifier

This is a classic reading magnifier which one can hold it along when reading.

Stand Magnifier

A height-adjustable stand is incorporated for a more effortless reading experience.

Pocket Magnifier

The foldable feature makes it portable and it can conveniently fit into pocket, handbag or briefcase.

Bar Magnifier

Easy to use by just laying it on a book page and gliding it across the surface, it is recommended for people with Arthritis or Tremors.

Dome Magnifier

A fixed-focus magnifier with plano-convex lens that naturally illuminates. It is highly recommended for people with Macular Degeneration, Arthritis or Tremors.

Desktop Video Magnifier

Electronic magnifying devices include hand-held and desktop video magnifier. Besides adjusting the magnification levels, both video magnifiers offer additional controls that can alter the contrast and enhance or reverse the colours of context.

Hand-held Video Magnifier

Different types of magnifiers are available with different magnification levels such as 4x, 8x, 16x, 28x or even greater. The right choice still depends on the text size or the object you want to view and most importantly, the remaining vision that you have.
